Uncured Dog Ear Mites! =(
by Richelle

My cousin's dog, Chancho, has a weird infestation in his ears! He has a dark, waxy coating in his ear that keeps coming back after we clean it! We bought some ear mite stuff today, but I don't know if it will work!
1) How can you tell if he has ear mites?
2) If he doesn't have ear mites, is it dangerous to use the medicine?
3) What exactly do ear mites do?
Hi Richelle,
Sorry to hear about Chancho's ear mite problem.
Answers to your questions:
1) For the most common symptoms of dog ear mites see: http://www.dog-supplies-advisor.com/dog-ear-mites.html
If you're still not sure a visit to the vet will end all doubt. If necessary, the vet may use a microscope to examine the debris and make a final determination.
2) Non-prescription dog ear mite medication should be safe if you follow the instructions. But as with any medication, if the symptoms appear to be getting worse -- stop using it immediately and consult your vet.
3) Dog ear mites are tiny spider like parasites that feed on dead skin cells and ear wax. As the mites burrow into the ear, they cause inflammation which your dog's body responds to by producing more ear wax.
Ear mites are very uncomfortable for your dog. As a result, your dog may also cause additional irritation or damage by scratching and shaking to relieve the itchiness.
Hope Chancho is feeling better real soon!
