Fresh Raw Bones –
Should You Give Your Dog A Bone?

There’s a lot of debate about giving dogs raw bones. And you’ll find strong opinions on both sides. Ultimately you’ll have to decide what is best for your dog.

There are quality raw food diets available that include ground bone. So if you don’t want to give your dog raw bones to chew on you can select a dog food that will still provide the nutritional benefits.

Some veterinarians believe that our pet dogs should be fed raw bones on a regular basis. They believe that raw bones are a natural and wholesome part of a dog’s natural diet.

Raw bones supply additional quality protein and nutrients to your dog's diet. They are a natural source of calcium, chondroitin, collagen and glucosamine, which are believed to help develop healthy joints and connective tissue.

Other veterinarians warn against feeding fresh raw bones since ingested bone fragments have been know to cause intestinal problems. Ingested bone chips can lead to vomiting and/or diarrhea. Bone chips or splinters can, in some cases, become impacted or cause intestinal blockages.

If a dog is unsuccessful in passing these bone fragments he may need to be hospitalized. In extreme cases a dog may even need surgery.

If you’re concerned about your dog ingesting bone fragments... but would still like to give her a natural bone to chew on... consider giving her "big knuckle" type bones. You know, the joint knuckles that have the big round knob on the end. Make sure that your dog can’t easily crush or splinter the bones.

For added nutritional value... the bones should also still have some meat and cartilage on them.

Take the bone away from your dog as soon as she has cleaned it. When the meat and cartilage are gone... your dog will naturally start working on the ends of the bone.

As your dog gnaws on the end of the bone... this is when bone chips are more likely to break off. These chips and splinters, when ingested, are what can potentially cause digestive problems for your pet.

Just like humans... different dogs have different constitutions. Some dogs are not affected by ingesting bone fragments. While other dogs exhibit problems if they ingest only small amounts of bone pieces.

If you decide to give your dog raw bones – remember you can minimize the risk of problems if you take the bone away from your dog as soon as it is "cleaned".

Since every dog is different you’ll need to decide what you feel is best for your dog. As a precaution, it is recommended to supervise your dog when she is feeding on a raw bone.
