What type of pet door is right for your house?

I still remember that feeling… going to install my first pet door and realizing I bought the wrong kind.

On the way back to the store we were kidding about how easy it would be in a cartoon... just draw a dog door on the sliding patio door and your dog can start using it right away.

Oh well... back to reality…

Learn from my mistake... plan ahead… not every dog door is the same.

The type you choose depends on several things... your dog's habits, where you put it, and the convenient features that you want.

If you'll be cutting it into an existing door or wall... do yourself a favor... make all your decisions before you get out the saw!

Door or Wall-Mounted Pet Doors

These classic doors require that you cut a hole in the wall or door. They're available in different sizes and styles to accommodate any size dog.

Remember the golden rule: measure twice, cut once!

  • Infra-red Door with Transmitter

If you want to make sure that only your pets that have your permission will be able to get into the house... than choose one with an infra-red key collar system.

  • Double Flap Door

A double flap system acts likes weather stripping to maximize energy retention.

Dog Doors For Sliding Patio Doors

A pet door for a sliding patio door looks just like a very narrow sliding patio door with a flexible flap in the bottom. Also available in deluxe models with extra, convenient features.

You just install the panel with the flap against the doorframe. Then slide the existing patio door until it closes up against the stationary panel with the flap.

You exit and enter through the sliding patio door as usual except that now the opening is narrower. Your pet can now come and go through the flap at the bottom.

Automatic Pet Door Systems

Electronic self-locking door systems will automatically open and then lock your sliding patio door each time it closes.

And with the addition of an electronic pet collar your pet can let herself in and out as needed.

You can give your family members easy access by adding an electronic keypad.

Screen-Mounted Dog Doors

A pet screen door will allow you to create an opening in a sliding or swinging screen door or a window screen. A screen-mounted door will accommodate dogs up to 30 lbs.
