Dog Training Collars Are Great Tools
If You Use Them Responsibly

Dog training collars can be a valuable dog training aid in the hands of a
responsible pet owner.

When used properly dog training collars are humane and effective tools and will greatly increase your chance of successfully training your pooch.

Dog training is all about communicating what’s acceptable behavior and what’s not to your dog.

For your dog to learn you must develop a clear-cut and immediate communication method that lets him know… in no uncertain terms… what pleases you and what doesn’t.

Your dog really wants to please you. But if your dog doesn’t understand your commands… or is easily distracted… your efforts may result in confusion, stress or frustration. These are all detrimental to your pooch’s learning attitude and will only result in more undesirable behavior.

And if you have a very strong willed dog, verbal commands may just be perceived by your dog as nagging.

When used as part of a well-rounded training program, dog training collars are a great way to get your dog’s attention and let him know instantly that his behavior is unacceptable.

It’s also important to mention that a well balanced dog training program will also include proper socialization and lots of praise for desirable behavior.

Correctional Dog Training Collars

It’s amazing just how fast a dog will respond to minimal correction from a dog training electronic collar once he understands your commands and the consequences of not responding to them.

This type of training actually empowers your dog. He gets to decide what he wants to do… and if he doesn’t want the correction associated with disobedient action… he’ll think twice about doing it.

My friend uses dog bark collars on her dogs with very good results. Both dogs have figured out that they get a correction for barking whenever they’re wearing the collars. And it’s pretty comical to watch because before they gear up for one of their barking sessions you can actually see them check to see if they’re wearing their collars. If the collar is on they decide not to bark.

Whatever type of dog training collar you choose… it’s essential that you do your homework… and learn how to use it properly. If necessary find a local dog trainer to teach you how to use it.

In the hands of a properly trained dog owner training dog collars are a great tool. If there’s ever an issue of cruelty… chances are it can be traced back to an irresponsible or untrained dog owner.

Dog Training Collar Review

There are basically two categories of dog training collars… mechanical and electronic collars.

And with proper training any of these collars can be used effectively. So let’s take a look at some of the more common types of training dog collars.

Mechanical Dog Training Collars

Choke Chains:

At first glance a dog choke collar looks pretty harmless… an innocuous piece of chain hanging around a dogs neck. But in the hands of an inexperienced dog owner they can be very dangerous.

Its unlimited choke feature allows the collar keep tightening around the dog’s neck. And harsh snapping or pulling can result in injury to a dog’s throat. But in the hands of an experienced trainer these dog training collars can be used very effectively.

Dog Prong Collars:

To a novice these training collars can look like medieval torture devices… now that’s pretty severe looking! Dog prong collars (also know as a pinch collar) are made of a series of interlocking chain with blunt (yes blunt!) metal prongs designed to rest on the dog’s neck.

When the collar is tightened, pressure is applied evenly around the dog’s neck by the metal prongs. Prong collars are much safer in the hands of an inexperienced dog owner than a traditional choke chain.

Limited Choke Collars:

Limited choke collars are often called Martingale dog collars. When these training dog collars are pulled they tighten to fit the dog’s neck exactly but are designed not to choke the dog.

They work great for any dog that tends to back out of a collar.

Gentle Leader Collars:

Similar to a head halter use by horse riders, dog gentle leader collars are cheap and pretty easy to use. They work as a dog training collar and leash.

Also know as head collars they are actually restraining devices, that when used with proper socialization training, can send a strong message to your pooch that you’re in charge and that his pulling and unruly jumping behavior is unacceptable.

Remote Electronic Dog Training Collars

Electric dog collars (or electronic training collars) work by delivering a minimal shock as a correction. The shock is similar to a static electricity shock that you get from walking across a carpet.

During electronic dog collar training you should always set the electronic collar on a minimal setting and increase as necessary until the stimulus gets your dogs attention.

The minimal setting required will very greatly from dog to dog. Because you operate these collars remotely dog e-collars are great for off lead training.

Just think how much safer you would feel if you were able to get your dog’s attention and correct her with an electronic training dog collar if she started running ahead of you towards the highway.

Dog Bark Collars

Bark collar dog training was designed to reduce undesired barking. When they sense barking an immediate and unpleasant stimulus is delivered.

Although bark collars by themselves are not the solution to a barking problem they can be very useful bark collar dog training tools when combined with other behavioral management techniques.

If you have a pooch that is in danger of loosing their home due to nuisance barking, a dog bark collar may be the perfect solution.

Bark collar dog training should never be used on anxiety related barking problems.

Citronella Bark Collars:

Citronella collar dog training is another option when trying to control nuisance barking. These training dog collars are activated by noise. Citronella bark collars release a brisk spray of citronella under the dog’s snout every time the dog barks. Most dogs find citronella’s strong scent unpleasant and it acts as a distraction.

Electronic Dog Bark Collars:

Unlike another dog training collar, electronic dog training shock collars are activated by the vibration caused by your dog’s bark.

Electronic dog bark collars won’t be accidentally triggered by environmental sounds… like a neighbor’s dog barking… or a car backfiring.

Sonic Bark Collars:

Sonic bark collar dog training was designed to deliver a high-pitched noise to discourage nuisance barking. These are not as effective as other training dog collars on the market. It seems that as a dog gets used to their high pitched noise the dog may resume barking.
