Of course, we want our pooch to have a cozy warm dog sweater when we bring him out into the cold, snowy weather.

And the more comfortable and form fitting the dog clothing... the easier it is to get your dog to wear them.

But how do you get your pooch to put up with a dog sweater when he’s used to walking around in the buff?

Well, just like anything else... a little training and lots of treats!

Don’t worry! We’ll give you the proven training techniques that will keep your dog from ditching his dog sweater and streaking through your next party.

And relax... these techniques have even worked on our unruly mutt... and there’s no math involved!

If Dog’s Were Meant To Wear Clothes
They Would Know How To Iron

Whether your dog needs protection in a cold, wet climate... or a fun party outfit to impress your friends... there are countless occasions where it would be a good idea for your dog to be able to wear suitable dog clothing.

But just like a toddler, until he’s properly trained, your dog would rather leave the small dog sweater hanging in the laundry room! Ah... the freedom!

Remember how long it takes a toddler to accept the fact that clothes are meant to be worn? Well luckily dog’s can be trained more quickly.

Dogs naturally want to please... and with some simple training and patience will conform to expected behavior that gets them the attention they crave.

So How Do You Keep The Dog’s Sweater On... Glue?

They say Rome wasn’t built in a day. Well, it takes a little time to train your dog in any new behavior.

Let’s face it... without training, trying to get your dog to accept a new dog sweater for your party this evening may not work out too well.

The tricks are simple when you go into it knowing you’ll need to be patient and determined.

You need to approach it gradually. Don’t expect your dog to accept wearing a dog sweater instantly... like turning on a light switch.

The trick is starting slowly with repeated, short term exposures to the dog sweater... and plenty of dog treats and praise.

Just like it took a little time to get your puppy used to a dog leash... your dog will gradually get used to wearing a dog sweater.

Always make it a fun, happy adventure so your dog will associate it with a pleasant experience. It’s counterproductive to train a dog with negative consequences or punishment.

Most dogs will have little trouble getting used to a well-fitting dog sweater. If it’s not uncomfortable, loose, or prone to snagging on things your dog will take it as normal.

That is... once you get him accustomed to wearing it so he doesn’t view it as a foreign object that’s meant to be removed.

Let him sniff it before you put it on him. You can even rub it on him so that it picks up his own familiar scent.

Only put the dog sweater on your dog for a few minutes at first. Use this time to keep him busy playing or keep him involved in an activity that he likes.

Keep his mind off the sweater while his body becomes used to the unfamiliar sensations.

Gradually increase the time he wears it while you keep him occupied with playful attention and dog treats.

At this point, don’t leave him alone yet or he may focus on removing the unfamiliar garment. It’s best if you don’t let him associate the feelings of fear or frustration with this new experience.

Your praise and extra attention will go a very long way in training your pooch to wear dog clothing.

I always found it helpful to harness train my dog first.

My dog looked forward to putting his harness on because we would usually go out for walks or exercise running around the yard. And I would leave the harness on him when we came back inside.

It was an easy step after that to train him to accept a dog sweater. I made sure he was distracted by activities and he always got a dog treat when the sweater went on.

With some patience and extra attention it’s surprising what our canine companions are willing to do to please us. They really can be man’s best friend.
