We all want our dogs to look their absolute best… and with well-fitting dog apparel it’s a sure thing!

After all… our dogs like to wear smart clothing, too.

And it’s no big deal to get your pooch into some trendy dog clothes! You just have to know how to measure your dog for the proper fit.

If you follow our simple guidelines and take some care when selecting the dog apparel you’re interested in . . . your dog will be voted the best dressed in the park.

I know that our dog Max looks really good in close fitting, knit dog sweaters that stretch a little to conform to his shape. Most of the dogs I see while walking Max look better when the clothes they’re wearing look like they were made to measure.

Getting that tailored look in dog clothing isn’t as hard as it used to be. It's not like you always need to spring for luxury dog apparel to get a proper fit.

Most of the top online dog apparel shops have good selections. Not only in a variety of colors and styles . . . but also in all the sizes to fit nearly any dog.

When you go to one of the online stores for dog apparel you’ll want to start with accurate measurements for your dog.

It’s just like when you shop online for people clothes . . . they have a much, much greater selection than the local store . . . but no fitting rooms to try on the clothes.

So take my advice . . . get a paper and pencil to take down your dog’s measurements and have fun checking out all the cool dog apparel on the web. Your dog’s gonna look great!

Measuring Your Pooch For Dog Apparel

But in a pinch I’ve been able to use a regular carpenter’s tape measure. You know, the flexible steel one that rolls up and hooks on your belt. At my house there’s one in the basement, garage and toolbox in the shed. And it still seems like I have to go looking for one when I need it! What’s up with that?!

Anyway . . . there are several measurements that you should take on your dog before ordering dog apparel online. Different dog breeds have different shapes and you’ll want to make sure you get dog clothing that fits the best.

The main measurements are from the base of your dog’s neck (starting at the back edge of the collar) right along the backbone to the base of the tail. This measurement is usually called the top line measurement and is essential for well-fitting dog apparel.

You also need to take your dog’s girth into account for a proper fit. Although many types of dog apparel have some adjustment in the closure, you’ll want to be as accurate as possible to assure the best fit.

Measure your dog’s girth at the widest part of your dog. This measurement is usually taken by wrapping the tape all the way around the chest just behind the front legs.

You may need a few dog treats to distract your dog enough for you to finish getting the measurements for your dog's apparel. Max must be ticklish or something because he starts to move around a lot when we try to get the tape measure under his chest.

You’ll also want to measure around your dog’s neck where the collar is usually worn. And some garments are fitted to take into account the distance between the front legs of your dog as well as head and neck-length measurements for hooded dog apparel.

We have a few hooded sweatshirts that Max looks comfortable wearing on brisk morning walks through the park. But he’s such a handsome pooch he makes any outfit look good.
